Hurricane High wins second Callaway Junior Tour High School Series event

The Callaway Junior Tour High School Series, sponsored by Tri-State Roofing and Sheet Metal and hosted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), continued its 2023 season with the Oglebay WVGA Invitational at Oglebay Resort today.  The Capital City Classic was cut short Monday at Edgewood Country Club in Charleston due to storms.

Hurricane High School won its second event of the now three-event series, with a combined score of 18 over par 231.  Team members were Savannah Hawkins, Tanner Sutphin, Kellen Pauley and Carson O’Dell.

Each school has a team of four players, with the best three scores counting as the team’s total score.  The series, a partner of Callaway Golf and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association, featured a field of 121 golfers on 30 high school teams from across West Virginia.

The remaining schools in the top five were Wheeling Park A, Cabell Midland A, St. Mary’s and Winfield.

The five players with the lowest individual scores received Tri-State Roofing and Sheet Metal Medalist trophies.  Those were awarded to Savannah Hawkins of Hurricane, Campbell Koegler of Wheeling Park A, Parker Vannoy of Parkersburg South, Jack Michael of Cabell Midland A and Preston Lawhon of St. Mary’s.

“We couldn’t wait to host this event for junior golfers,” said Oglebay’s Director of Golf Operations Danny Ackerman.  “Our mission is to cater to youth groups and young people, so hosting WVGA events is special for us.”

“Today was a beautiful day for golf for this large field of youth golfers,” said WVGA Tournament Manager – Youth Golf Lucas Ware.  “The course played well, Oglebay Resort was a great host and our youth had a great day of tournament golf.”

Teams participating today were from the following high schools: Brooke, Cabell Midland (two teams), East Fairmont, Fairmont Senior, George Washington (2 teams), Grafton, Hurricane, John Marshall, Keyser, Linsly, Morgantown, Parkersburg (2 teams), Parkersburg South, Petersburg, Point Pleasant, Roane County, St. Mary’s,  University (2 teams), Summers County, Wahama, Warren (2 teams), Wheeling Park (2 teams), Wheeling Central and Winfield.
