The 102nd playing of the West Virginia Women’s Amateur, conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), concluded three days of stroke play at The Club at Cress Creek in Shepherdstown with Morgantown’s Alyssa Zhang coming from a one-stroke deficit yesterday to win the Championship today with a four-stroke lead. Zhang finished the championship at four over par (+4) 217 for the three-day event.
The overall net winner was Valentina Aguilar of Elkins, finishing at 23 under par (-23) 190.
With Zhang also taking the Championship Flight, rounding out that group were:
- Savannah Hawkins of Hurricane, (+8) 221;
- Emily Holzophel of Rayland, Ohio, (+11) 224;
- Cathleen Wong of Parkersburg, (+17) 230;
- Kimberly Eaton of Charles Town, (+18) 231; and
- Sara Veara of Berkeley Springs, (+25) 238.
Taking top honors in the First Flight was Kailey Pettit of Moundsville, finishing at 30 over par (+30) 243. Rounding out the flight were;
- Daneen Shears of Elizabeth;
- Lisa Younis of Shepherdstown;
- Karen Kinnett of Shepherdstown; and
- Karen Rainey of Daniels.
Taking top honors in the Second Flight was Marra Johnson of Bridgeport, finishing at 42 over par (+42) 255. Rounding out the flight were;
- Valentina Aguilar of Elkins;
- Allison Ballard of Charleston;
- Leigh Chandler of Fairmont; and
- Diana Watkins of Elizabeth.
“We congratulate Alyssa on her come-from-behind championship win,” said Cress Creek’s Head Golf Professional Jeff Rosenberg. “We also congratulate Daneen and Marra on their flight wins.”
“It’s just great fun watching the best female golfers reshape the leader board on the final day of play,” said WVGA’s Director of Women’s Golf and One Day Events Sarah Cole.
