Susan Vail - 2019

Sue Vail was an eight-time WV Women’s Amateur Champion. She won in 1976, 1984,1985,1988,1989, 1992, 1993, and 1998.  She was the WV Women’s Senior Amateur Champion seven times, winning from 1991 through 1997.  She competed in the Women’s Virginias/Carolinas matches a total of 18 times and was elected Captain of the Virginias team.

Sue served as a member of the USGA United State’s Girl’s Championship Committee and was a member of the US Senior Women’s Golf Association in 1980-1983.  She competed in the US Women’s Amateur in 1973 and the Women’s Senior Amateur in 1991 and 1992.  She was inducted into the Dapper Dan Club and Ohio Valley Legends of Golf.

Sue obtained a bachelor’s degree in english from WVU and a master’s degree in community education from Ball State University and spent 37 years in the classroom.  She went on to start the Women’s golf program at Wheel Jesuit University in the fall of 2003 where she led the Cardinals for the next 19 years.  There, she was a three-time conference coach of the year, won four Mountain East Conference titles and two WV Intercollegiate titles.

Sue was a past secretary-treasurer of the WV Women’s Golf Association and in 2016 was elected to the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Committee, where one of her responsibilities was to direct the eastern region NCAA Division II Women’s Championship.  She also served as the charter chairperson of the Centre Market Commission in Wheeling and a member of the Wheeling Planning Commission.
