Second day of WV Junior Amateur Championship sees three division titles decided

The West Virginia Junior Amateur Championship, for players under 18 and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), saw three division titles claimed Tuesday at Canaan Valley Resort and the boys’ and girls’ championship rounds set for Wednesday.

Parker O’Dell of Hurricane maintained his first day’s lead in the boys 13-14 division, winning the tournament at one over par 145.  Campbell Hettlinger of Huntington won the girls 10-14 division title, playing in her first WVGA event.  Jude Walker of Mount Zion won the boys 12 and under division by six strokes, finishing at five over par 149.

McCartney Hinkle of Bluefield, Va., finished the second day of the Boys’ Championship with a two-stroke lead over Argyle Downes of Charles Town at nine under par 135.  Cam Fallon of Parkersburg is in third at six under par 138, while Carson Higginbotham of Clarksburg is in fourth at four under par 140 and Jackson Woodburn of Scott Depot is in fifth at three under par 141.

In the Girls’ Championship Division, Savannah Hawkins of Hurricane and Kerri-Anne Cook of Oceana remain tied for the lead at six over par 150.  Scarlett Albertson of Charleston is in third, while Madilyn Buttrey of Williamstown and McKenzie Armstrong of Belmont are tied for fourth.

“We’re always happy to see the kids here since junior golf is the future of golf,” said Canaan’s Golf Shop Manager Sherri Harold.  “It’s good to see such great support for these young golfers from their parents, grandparents and other family members.”

“Parker O’Dell claimed his back-to-back Boys 13-14 division title with a stellar round of one under par today,” said WVGA’s Director of Junior Golf and Core Services Lucas Ware.  “Congratulations to Jude and Campbell for their wins, as well. I’m looking forward to the final Championship round tomorrow!”
