Born in Wheeling to Dr. Frank N. and Mary E. Carroll, Sarah Suzanne (Sally) was the youngest of four sisters. She was educated in the Parochial Schools of Ohio County. After graduation from St. Joseph Academy, she attended Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, obtaining her degree in history and sociology.

Her love affair with the sport began when she was introduced to the game at age l0 at Wheeling Country Club, where she became the oft-time club women’s champion.   Discovering her true passion for the game of golf, Sally went on to win the WV Women’s Amateur Championship a total of seven times and also finished as runner-up six times. One of her greatest golf achievements was making it to the fourth round of the Women’s British Amateur Championship in 1964 along with twice finishing as the second low amateur in the Women’s United States Open.

Throughout her elaborate career, Sally held many prestigious positions. She competed and was appointed Captain of the Virginias vs. Carolinas Matches multiple times and at one point was the President of the Women’s West Virginia Golf Association. She held a spot on the women’s committee of the United States Golf Association for twenty years and served as the President of the U.S. Senior Women’s Golf Association for four years. One of Sally’s greatest impacts on the game was through Junior Golf as she served as Chairwoman for the USGA Girl’s Junior Committee for four years.

As a true testament to her passion and influence, in 1984 she received the National Card Walker Award, presented by the Professional Golfers Association. The award, (which had been given to the great Jack Nicklaus the year prior), was to recognize her years of outstanding dedication and contribution to Junior Golf.  In 1978, Sally was inducted into the WV Sports Hall of Fame.

Sally’s dedication and desire to make women’s and junior golf better leaves us with a model of a true ambassador to the game.
