Leaderboard Sees Major Changes; Field Cut to 60 for Final Day of West Virginia Open Championship

Six amateurs and four professionals lead the field.

There were 126 golfers teeing off today at the 92nd West Virginia Open Championship on Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Hurricane vying for 60 spots in Friday’s championship round.

Professional golfer and 2023 WV Open Champion Ryan Bilby of Follansbee is now tied with three-time  WV Open Champion Christian Brand of Hurricane for the lead at nine under par (-9) 135 at the close of the second day of competition, aided by six birdies apiece.  Rounding out the top ten are:

  • Thadd Obecny II (p) of Wheeling, (-8) 136 ;
  • Cameron Jarvis of Barboursville, (-6) 138;
  • Nick Dent of White Sulphur Springs, (-6) 138;
  • Sam O’Dell of Hurricane, (-5) 139;
  • David Bradshaw (p) of Harpers Ferry, (-5) 139;
  • Chris Williams of Scott Depot, (-5) 139;
  • Jack Michael of Huntington, (-4) 140; and
  • Kenny Hess (p) of Parkersburg, (-4) 140.

“Today has seen a lot of changes on the leaderboard, and we congratulate the 60 golfers who will be competing on Friday,” said WVGA Executive Director Chris Slack.  “We want to thank Generations Ford and Generations Physical Therapy for their support.”

“We’ve been fighting Mother Nature all season, so we hope it stays dry this week.  We want the course to be a good challenge for the players every day,” said Sleepy Hollow’s Head Golf Professional Jimmy Harrison.

The final round of the championship will begin Friday morning at 8:00 a.m.

The WV OPEN Championship has a rich 91-year history. Legendary professional golfer Sam Snead holds the record for the most WV OPEN victories at 17 between 1936 and 1973.  Professional golfer David Bradshaw of Harpers Ferry has claimed the title 12 times from 2001 to 2021 and is playing in this year’s event. The defending champion is Todd Duncan.
