Fourth West Virginia Open Qualifier Adds 17 at Riverside in Mason

The fourth of six state-wide qualifiers for the 92nd West Virginia Open Championship, hosted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), took place on Sunday at Riverside Golf Club in Mason.  Over 50 golfers teed off in hopes of obtaining one of 17 qualifying and two alternate spots available today for the final field of the West Virginia Open which will take place at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Hurricane on July 23-25.

“We’re excited to host WVGA events, especially a qualifier, and we looked forward to seeing who was going to the Open,” said Riverside’s Head Golf Professional Ty Roush.  “Like everyone else, we’ve had lots of rain and lots of heat.  Our fairways were pretty good, and our greens were even better.”

Five golfers tied at two over par (+2) 72 today to earn Medalist honors.  They were Marshall Creel of Millwood, Jason King and Trenton Roush, both of New Haven, Cameron Fallon of Parkersburg and Christian Casingal of Morgantown.  Other qualifiers were:

  • Duncan Waugaman of Huntington, (+3) 73;
  • Adam Gill of Wheeling, (+3) 73;
  • Mike Haynes of Gallipolis, Ohio, (+3) 73;
  • Connor Ingels of New Haven, (+4) 74;
  • Charlie Monk of Barboursville, (+4) 74;
  • Patrick Johnson of Racine, Ohio, (+4) 74;
  • Will Johnson of Charleston, (+5) 75;
  • Mark Warden of Vincent, Ohio, (+5) 75;
  • Kelan Lucas of Ravenswood, (+6) 76;
  • Brett Mayo of Milton, (+6) 76;
  • Jacob Workman of Chapmanville, (+6) 76; and
  • Jude Walker of Elizabeth, (+6) 76.

Alternates are Brian Bailey of Bridgeport and Ben Ekelman of Parkersburg.

The WV Open Championship has a rich 91-year history. Legendary professional golfer Sam Snead holds the record for the most WV Open victories at 17. The defending champion is Todd Duncan of Daniels.  The WV Open features the best amateur and professional golfers in West Virginia.
