The West Virginia Junior Amateur Championship, for players under 18 and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), concluded Thursday at Canaan Valley Resort in Davis. Champions in the boys’ and girls’ divisions were crowned today.
Tommy Evans of Charles Town won the Boys’ Championship field, a competition he led all three days of the event, finishing at 16 under par (-16) 200. Jack Michael of Huntington finished in second, two strokes back at 14 under par (-14) 202, followed by Cooper Ward of Beaver in third, finishing today with a seven under par (-7) 65, to finish the three days at seven under par (-7) 209. Rounding out the top five in a three-way tie for fourth at six under par (-6) 210 were Isaac Hayes of Hurricane, Stephen McDavid of Scott Depot and McCartney Hinkle of Bluefield, Va.
In the Girls’ Championship Division, Chastyn Viars of South Charleston maintained a four-stroke lead to win at 24 over par (+24) 240. Tied for second, at 28 over par (+28) 244, were Audrey Kerr of Bridgeport and Lexi Green of Charleston. McKenzie Armstrong of Belmont finished fourth at 29 over par (+29) 245, followed by Alana Hamaty of Bluefield in fifth at 42 over par (+42) 258.
“Each day was a little different set-up and challenge for these players, with today being the toughest,” said Canaan’s James Huber. “We congratulate the winners for the successes.”
“Two underclassmen found wins this week on a great layout for this championship,” said WVGA’s Director of Junior Golf and Core Services Lucas Ware. “The staff at Canaan Valley Resort is fantastic and we cannot thank them enough for their hospitality.”
