Callaway Junior Tour High School Series opens at Edgewood Country Club

The Callaway Junior Tour High School Series, sponsored by Tri-State Roofing and Sheet Metal and hosted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), opened its 2024 season with the WVGA Capital City Classic at Edgewood Country Club in Sissonville.

Each school has a team of four players, with the best three scores counting as the team’s total score.  The series, a partner of Callaway Golf and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association, featured a field of 131 golfers on 33 high school teams from across West Virginia.

Shady Spring High School won the opening event of the four-event series with a combined score of two over par 215.  Team members were Tyler Beard, Cooper Ward, Jack Williams and Grant Winkler.

The remaining schools in the top ten were:

  • Cabell Midland A, (+7) 220;
  • Hurricane A, (+11) 224;
  • Parkersburg South, (+18) 231;
  • Winfield, (+22) 235;
  • Linsly, (+24) 237;
  • George Washington A, (+26) 239;
  • Chapmanville Regional, (+29) 242;
  • Elkins, (+31) 244; and
  • Spring Valley, (+31) 244.

The five players with the lowest individual scores received Tri-State Roofing and Sheet Metal Medalist trophies.  Those were awarded to:

  • Jack Michael, Cabell Midland A, (-2) 69;
  • Cooper Ward, Shady Spring, (-2) 69;
  • Lee Willard, George Washington A, (-1) 70;
  • Tyler Beard, Shady Spring, (-1) 70; and
  • Stephen McDavid, Winfield, (-1) 70.

“It’s good to have the young talent here, since they’re the future of our sport.  It’s great to see them representing their schools,” said Edgewood’s Head Golf Professional Craig Berner.  “The course is coming back from the West Virginia Open a week ago and Kenney Eggeleston has the course in good shape.”
