Sixth Qualifier for 104th WV Amateur Championship tees off in Huntington

The sixth qualifier for the 104th WV Amateur Championship, presented by Astorg Motor Company and Mercedes-Benz of Charleston and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), took place May 22 at Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington.

There was a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard.  Bosten Miller of Hurricane, Jack Michael of Huntington and Clayton Thomas of Proctorville, Ohio each scored a one over par 72.

Scoring five birdies was Alex White of Barboursville, four birdies each for Cole Kiley of Huntington and Bosten Miller of Hurricane and three birdies each for Todd Harris of Culloden and Jeremiah Fizer of Proctorville, Ohio.

Other major event presenters include United Bank and The Greenbrier.

Over 400 golfers from West Virginia have registered to qualify for this year’s Amateur Championship.  There were 43 players competing on May 22 for 13 spots and two alternates in the Championship.  The other qualifying players from today were:

  • Jamie Bailes of Huntington, (+3) 74;
  • Alex White of Barboursville, (+3) 74;
  • Jeremiah Fizer of Proctorville, Ohio, (+3) 74;
  • Chase Preston of Chapmanville, (+3) 74;
  • Anderson Goldman of Charleston (+4) 75;
  • Todd Harris of Culloden, (+4) 75;
  • Andrew Agee of Huntington, (+5) 76;
  • Chris Bohach of Ona, (+5) 76;
  • Nikolas Tomblin of Alum Creek, (+5) 76; and
  • Steven Nutter of St. Mary’s, (+5) 76.

The alternates are Cole Kiley of Huntington and Zach Chapman of Culloden.

“We received some good weather for our qualifier for the West Virginia Amateur Championship,” said Guyan’s General Manager Allen Thacker.  “It’s nice to have all these good golfers enjoying our course.”

“We’re pleased to be at Guyan Golf and Country Club to help determine our field for the West Virginia Amateur Championship, presented by Astorg Auto and Mercedes-Benz,” said WVGA Interim Executive Director Chris Slack.  “With today’s field of strong western players, we’re pleased to have a number of the premier courses in West Virginia hosting our qualifiers.”

The “Last Chance” qualifier will take place May 25 “Last Chance Qualifier” at Bel Meadow Golf Club in  Mt. Clare.

The Amateur Championship will take place May 28-31 at The Greenbrier, which has hosted the event 96 of the past 103 years.
