Day one is in the books at the West Virginia Golf Association’s (WVGA) Senior Four-Ball Championship at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling with 27 two-man teams teeing off in two divisions.
John Bumgarner of Scott Deport and Jonathan Clark of Hurricane took the first day’s lead in the Championship Division at eight under par (-8) 63. Two strokes behind at six under par (-6) 65 is the team of Ian Patrick of Huntington and Todd Westfall of Bridgeport. The Wheeling team of Bryan Myers and Joe Doerr site in third at five under par (-5) 66. Tied for fourth at two under par (-2) 69 are the team of Michael Koreski of Parkersburg and Jay Davis of St. Clairsville, Ohio, and the team of Steve Sprout of Parkersburg and Scott Perry of Lowell, Ohio.
In the Senior Division, the team of Bob Clark and Penn Kurtz of Wheeling hold a two-stroke lead over the next three teams, finishing the first day at three under par (-3) 68. Tied for second at one under par (-1) 70 are the team of Buddy Butler of Williamstown and Scott Cozzens of Vincent, Ohio, the team of Dubie Dailey and Mike Ricci, both of Wheeling, and the team of Gary Hawkins and Hank Middlemas, both of Fairmont. In fifth is the team of Joe Crislip and Neil Christiansen, both of Parkersburg, finishing at one over par (+1) 72.
“It was overcast today, but temperatures were better than the heat we’ve had,” said WVGA Executive Director Chris Slack. “This gave our golfers the opportunity for some great scores.”
“After the spring flood and the summer drought, the course is benefitting from the recent rain we’ve had,” said Oglebay’s General Manager of Golf Operations Danny Ackerman. “We’re excited to host this event, especially since so many Wheeling golfers are in the field this week.”
