First Day of WV Junior Amateur Championship Sees Strong Finishes

The West Virginia Junior Amateur Championship, for players under 18 and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), started Monday at Canaan Valley Resort in Davis with a field of 93 players.

Canaan’s James Huber said, “We love hosting this event, and we’ve been involved with junior golf for a number of years.  These young players just need to trust their abilities as they move through the tournament.”

“The golf course is in incredible playing condition and some of the scores reflected that, despite some difficult hole locations and the weather delay,” said WVGA’s Director of Junior Golf and Core Services Lucas Ware.  “I am eager to see how the three divisions finish up tomorrow.”

Tommy Evans of Charles Town holds a four-stroke lead over the Boys’ Championship field, finishing the first day at eight under par (-8) 64.  Jack Michael of Huntington is in second at four under par (-4) 68, followed by Justus Mann of Chapmanville in third at three under par (-3) 69.  Tied for fourth are Isaac Hayes of Hurricane and McCartney Hinkle of Bluefield, Va., finishing at two under par (-2) 70.

In the Girls Championship Division, Lexi Green of Charleston leads the field at seven over par (+7) 79.  Chastyn Viars of South Charleston is one stroke back at eight over par (+8) 80, followed by McKenzie Armstrong of Belmont in third at nine over par (+9) 81.  Alana Hamaty of Bluefield and Audrey Kerr of Bridgeport are tied for fourth at 12 over par (+12) 84.
