The 2025 Callaway Junior Tour Rookie League, sponsored by Tri-State Roofing and Sheet Metal and hosted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), opened the season on April 26 at Big Bend Golf Course and April 27 at Coonskin Park.
The CJRT Rookie League is broken into three divisions, based on skill and experience, with AAA and AA playing nine holes, and A playing six holes.
The first event of the season was played Saturday, April 26, at Big Bend Golf Course in Tornado, featuring a field of 20 golfers aged 5 to 18. Division winners were:
- AAA: Wyatt Caplan of Morgantown, (+8) 43;
- AA: Brooks Potter of South Charleston, (-2) 33; and
- A: Ellis Walker of Elizabeth, (+7) 30.
The final event of the weekend was played Sunday, April 27, at Coonskin Park in Charleston, featuring a field of 24 golfers aged 5 to 18. Division winners were:
- AAA: Carter Barrett of Ona, (-1) 26;
- AA: Jake Puffenberger of Charleston, (+8) 35; and
- A: Amos Ghareeb of Charleston, (+8) 26.
“The weather wasn’t the greatest on Saturday, but some of the players had their first opportunity to play competitive golf. The weather was better, if still cool, on Sunday,” said First Tee – West Virginia Program Director Alyssa Scragg. “These young golfers are the future of our sport, so we’re always glad to start the season for the WVGA and the Callaway Junior Tour Rookie League.”
“We’re very excited to host these young golfers who are getting tournament experience so early. That’s one reason we host middle school golf from March to May,” said Coonskin’s shop manager Jeff Bryant. “Our Short Course @ Coonskin was designed for events like this, in addition to our golfers of all ages. The course is in fabulous condition, with greens running about a 10, and that’s relatively fast on a regular basis.”
