Three golfers, including one West Virginian, qualified for the US Mid-Amateur qualifying from Monday’s event at Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, W. Va. Over 60 golfers competed for three spots to advance in US Mid-Amateur qualifying, as well as two alternate positions.
Top honors went to Davey Jude of Kermit, Chad Wilfong of Charlotte, NC, and Lucas Armstrong of Church Hill, Tenn, tied for first at five under par 66. Finishing one stroke behind at four under par 67 to claim the two alternate spots were Philip Reale of Ona and Nathan Kerns of Ironton, Ohio.
The West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), in support and collaboration with the United States Golf Association (USGA), conducted the US Mid-Amateur qualifier for players over the age of 25.
West Virginians Cam Roam of Huntington and Chase Preston of Chapmanville tied for ninth at two under par 69, while Noah Mullens of Milton and Tad Tomblin of Alum Creek tied for 13th at one under par 70.
Other highlights of the day included six birdies for Jude, Wilfong and Armstrong, while Kerns had six birdies and two eagles and Reale had eight birdies.
“We had some great talent on the course today and are thrilled to see two West Virginians finish so well,” said Guyan’s Head Golf Professional Rick Ellison. “The course is actually green, thanks to our access to flowing water.”
“We are honored to host one of the 68 US Mid-Amateur qualifiers across the country,” said WVGA Executive Director Chris Slack. “I’m always amazed to see where our participants call home. In our field of 62 players, in addition to our eight West Virginia golfers, we have players from 11 other states and Canada. We’re glad for the chance to let them experience at least a part of West Virginia.”
