Final day of WV Junior Amateur Championship crowns two former champions

The West Virginia Junior Amateur Championship, for players under 18 and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), saw boys’ and girls’ championship crowned at Canaan Valley Resort.

Argyle Downes of Charles Town, the boys’ 2021 Junior Amateur Champion, came from a two-stroke deficit to defeat McCartney Hinkle of Bluefield, Va., by two strokes.  Downes finished at 11 under par 205, while Hinkle finished at nine under par 207.  Rounding out the top five were Cam Fallon of Parkersburg, Jackson Woodburn of Scott Depot and Tommy Evans of Charles Town.

In the Girls’ Championship Division, Savannah Hawkins of Hurricane broke the two-day tie with Kerri-Anne Cook of Oceana to win the title at three over par 219.  Hawkins, who won this tournament in 2022, scored 12 birdies over the 54-hole competition to aid in her win. Cook finished at six over par 222.  Scarlett Albertson of Charleston and Madilyn Buttrey of Williamstown tied for third and McKenzie Armstrong of Belmont finished in fifth.

“This was the first year for a three-day, 54-hole tournament, so we’re glad to be the first course to host this format,” said Canaan’s Golf Shop Manager Sherri Harold.  “We want to congratulate the Division winners from yesterday and, of course, Savannah and Argyle for their wins today.”

“It’s great to see two former champions once again take the trophy this year.  That shows the commitment of these young golfers to such a great sport,” said WVGA’s Director of Junior Golf and Core Services Lucas Ware.  “We thank the staff at Canaan Valley Resort for providing such a great course and wonderful atmosphere for the 2024 Junior Amateur Championship.”
