Joseph Kalaskey of South Charleston was one of four golfers and two alternates in the 18-hole US Open local event Monday at Parkersburg Country Club. Kalaskey finished at five under par 68 to tie with Jake Collon of Venetia, Pa. and Charlie Hanson of Richmond, Va. The fourth qualifier at four under par 69 was Daniel Azallion of Hilton Head Island, SC.
The two alternates were West Virginians Jackson Woodburn of Scott Depot and Todd Duncan of Daniels. Both golfers finished the day at four under par 69.
The West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), in support and collaboration with the United States Golf Association (USGA), conducted the US Open local qualifier. The US Open is scheduled for June 13 to 16 at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in North Carolina.
“It’s always a pleasure to host an event of this caliber at this level,” Parkersburg’s Head Golf Professional Adam Chesnut said. “We’re always happy to be part of something like this, especially after recent weather challenges. We had flooding in back-to-back weeks that closed the back five holes, but Pat Maher and his crew have worked miracles.”
“We are honored to play host to one of the 109 US Open local qualifiers across the country,” said WVGA Executive Director Chris Slack. “I’m always amazed to see where our participants call home. In today’s field, Ohio topped the list with 20 players, while West Virginia had 17 players and North Carolina had 12 players. Other players came from Arizona, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, plus Canada and Mexico. We’re glad for the chance to let them experience at least a part of West Virginia.”
