25th Junior Match Play Championship Crowns Kerr and Michael

The 25th Junior Match Play Championship, conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA) for players under 18, concluded Sunday at Parkersburg Country Club.  Two new champions were crowned.

On the girls’ side, Audrey Kerr of Bridgeport and Madilyn Buttrey of Williamstown had a bye round into the semi-finals, only to meet up in the final round for the championship.  Kerr took the win over Buttrey in 19 holes after overcoming a 5-hole deficit.

Jack Michael of Huntington defeated defending champion McCartney Hinkle of Bluefield, Va., 5 and 4 to claim the boys’ championship title.  Starting the semi-finals earlier Sunday, Hinkle defeated Will Gruse of Charleston 4 and 3, while Michael defeated Tyler Beard of Lewisburg 1 up to set the championship match.

“Hosting the tournament on Mother’s Day weekend gives the moms a chance to see their kids in action on the course,” said Parkersburg’s Head Golf Professional Adam Chesnut. “Two moms got very special presents!”

“It was a great championship weekend and an exciting finish with the girls’ division going to an extra hole,” said WVGA Director of Junior Golf and Core Services Lucas Ware. “We always appreciate Parkersburg Country Club for allowing us to host this event.”
