2025 WVGA High School Series Opens with Two Events

The 2025 West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA) High School Series is a five-event individual and team series played on courses across West Virginia.

The first event of the Series, the W. Va. Army National Guard WVGA Invitational, took place Wednesday on the Cobb Course at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels and featured 29 four-player teams from throughout the state.

The team from University High School in Morgantown took top honors, with their fourth player’s score breaking the tie with Hurricane High School.  Players on the University team were Jagger Barnes, William Biddington, Owen Estel and Evan Toler, finishing at 16 over par (+16) 232.

Rounding out the top five were Bridgeport High School, George Washington High School and Washington High School.

Tommy Evans of Washington took low individual honors, finishing at four under par (-4) 68.  Rounding out the top five individuals were Alexander Randolph of Bridgeport, Owen Estel of University, Drew Marling of John Marshall and Tyler Stover of Woodrow Wilson on a scorecard playoff.

“The course conditions were great, coming off our member/guest tournament over the weekend,” said Glade’s Assistant Golf Professional Cole Moore.  “We host Shady Spring High School regularly, and we love hosting the High School Series.”

“This was a great event to kick off our new partnership with the WV Army National Guard. We hope to continue this event for years to come,” said WVGA Director of Junior Golf and Core Services Lucas Ware.

The second event of the Series, the Maddox Potter Capital City Classic, took place Thursday at Edgewood Country Club in Sissonville and featured 28 teams.

The team from Hurricane High School took top honors, leading the second-place finishers by 15 strokes.  Hurricane finished at one under par (-1) 212, thanks to players Bryce Davis, Isaac Hayes, Carson and Parker O’Dell.

Rounding out the top five were Cabell Midland High School, Chapmanville Regional High School, George Washington High School and Shady Spring High School.

Isaac Hayes of Hurricane took low individual honors, finishing at three under par (-3) 68.  Rounding out the top five individuals, including a three-way tie for fifth, were Cam Fallon of Parkersburg South, Carson O’Dell of Hurricane, Will Gruse of Charleston Catholic, Parker O’Dell of Hurricane, Wyatt Maynard of Cabell Midland and Justus Mann of Chapmanville Regional.

“We love have the high school teams on our course,” said Edgewood’s Head Golf Professional Craig Berner.  “We have experience with both Sissonville and George Washington.  We’re pleased the course has held up so well with this year’s heat and rain.”

“We jumped at the opportunity when asked to dedicate this annual event to Maddox Potter. It was nice to have his family speak and spread the word about Maddox’s life.  We’re always grateful to our presenting sponsor, Tri-State Roofing and Sheet Metal Company,” said Ware.  “We have a core of teams that will play every event, but it’s fun to see the teams who are able to join us for an event or two.”
