Two teams will face off Sunday afternoon for the West Virginia Golf Association’s (WVGA) Four-Ball Match Play Championship on the Palmer Course at Stonewall Resort in Roanoke Sunday, but the competition isn’t over yet to determine the 2025 champions.
In Saturday afternoon’s quarterfinals round, the team of Bryson Karp and Matt Gissy, both of Weston, defeated Tyler Shamblin of Elkview and Tad Tomblin of Alum Creek 5 and 4; they will face Parker O’Dell and Isaac Hayes, two Callaway Junior Tour players from Hurricane, who defeated Lucas Ware of Charleston and Adam Ware of Grafton 6 and 4 to advance to Sunday.
On the other side of the bracket, Cory Hoshor of Eleanor and Davey Jude of Kermit, 2023 Co-Champions, faced Jess Ferrell of Fairmont and Jared Taylor of Bluefield, winning 4 and 3; the team of Cam Roam and Duncan Waugaman, both of Huntington defeated Drew Green of Beaver and Drew Kane of Bridgeport 1 Up to advance to Sunday.
“We were excited to have the best 16 teams competing for a chance to move on to Sunday’s Championship,” said Stonewall’s Head Golf Professional Mike Rogers. “This course is a great test of golf for these players, and the course is in really good shape on the tees and greens.”
In Saturday morning’s Round of 16 play:
- Hoshor and Jude defeated Mike Keiffer of Scott Depot and Jeff Whitman of Hurricane, 3 and 2;
- Jess Ferrell of Fairmont and Jared Taylor of Bluefield defeated Stephen McDavid and Jackson Woodburn, both of Scott Depot, 2 and 1;
- Cam Roam and Duncan Waugman, both of Huntington, defeated Nick Dent of White Sulphur Springs and Jeff McGraw of Princeton, 1 Up;
- Green and Kane defeated Ben Carew of South Charleston and Will Gruse of Charleston in 20 holes;
- Shamblin and Tomblin defeated Noah Mullens of Milton and Clayton Thomas of Proctorville, Ohio, 5 and 4;
- Karp and Gissy defeated Anderson Goldman and Mario Palumbo, both of Charleston, 5 and 3;
- O’Dell and Hayes defeated Hunter O’Neal and Brayden Surface, both of Bluefield, Va., 1 Up; and
- Lucas and Adam Ware defeated Matthew Moore and Josh Arbaugh, both of Morgantown, 1 Up.
“It’s been great seeing outstanding amateur players from their teens to their 40’s and beyond on the course this weekend. The golf today was great, and we’re looking forward to a great championship round Sunday,” said WVGA Executive Director Chris Slack.
