102nd Playing of West Virginia Women’s Amateur Opens in Shepherdstown 

The 102nd playing of the West Virginia Women’s Amateur, conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), ended the first day of stroke play of the three-day championship at The Club at Cress Creek in Shepherdstown.

Sunday’s first round of stroke play saw Emily Holzopfel of Rayland, Ohio, top the leader board in stroke play at even par (E) 71.

Rounding out the top 10, with ties, at the end of the first day are:

  • Alyssa Zhang of Morgantown, (+2) 73;
  • Cathleen Wong of Parkersburg, (+7) 78;
  • Kimberly Eaton of Charles Town, (+8) 79;
  • Kailey Pettit of Moundsville, (+8) 79;
  • Savannah Hawkins of Hurricane, (+8) 79;
  • Sara Veara of Berkeley Springs, (+10) 81;
  • Daneen Shears of Elizabeth, (+13) 84;
  • Lisa Younis of Shepherdstown, (+14) 85; and
  • Karen Kinnett of Shepherdstown, (+16) 87.

Stroke play continues Monday, with the 2025 Championship decided on Tuesday.

“It’s a privilege and honor to host any WVGA state tournament as grand as this one,” said Cress Creek’s Head Golf Professional Jeff Rosenberg.  “We’re thrilled to have the best women amateurs of all ages on our course for three days.”

“This championship features 16 of the best female golfers from West Virginia from teenagers to seniors,” said WVGA’s Director of Women’s Golf and One Day Events Sarah Cole.
