Winfield High wins final Callaway Junior Tour High School Series event

The Callaway Junior Tour High School Series, sponsored by Tri-State Roofing and Sheet Metal and hosted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), closed out its 2023 season with the Parkersburg Country Club High School Invitational in Parkersburg today.

Winfield High School won its first event of the three-event series, with a combined score of one under par 218.  Team members were Andrew Johnson, Preston Keiffer, Stephen McDavid and Jackson Woodburn.

Hurricane High School won the 2023 Tri-State Cup as the overall winner of the High School Series, having won the first two events.  Team members were Savannah Hawkins, Tanner Sutphin, Kellen Pauley and Carson O’Dell.

Each school has a team of four players, with the best three scores counting as the team’s total score.  The series, a partner of Callaway Golf and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association, featured a field of 116 golfers on 29 high school teams from across West Virginia.

The remaining schools in the top five were Cabell Midland A, Hurricane, Morgantown and Wheeling Park.

The five players with the lowest individual scores received Tri-State Roofing and Sheet Metal Medalist trophies.  Those were awarded to Jack Michael of Cabell Midland A, Jackson Woodburn of Winfield, Savannah Hawkins of Hurricane, Solas Chhin-Kreiner of Morgantown, and Will Gruse of Charleston Catholic.

“We had absolutely perfect course conditions, by far the best we’ve had in years, thanks to Superintendent Pat Maher and his crew,” said Parkersburg’s Head Golf Professional Adam Chesnut.  “It’s always fun for us to promote junior golf, especially at Larry Martin’s home course.  We’re passionate about this.”

“Today was a beautiful day for golf for this large field of youth golfers,” said WVGA Tournament Manager – Youth Golf Lucas Ware.  “The course played well, Parkersburg Country Club was a great host and our youth had a great day of tournament golf.”

Teams participating today were from the following high schools: Buffalo, Cabell Midland (two teams), Charleston Catholic, George Washington (2 teams), Grafton, Herbert Hoover, Hurricane, Linsly, Morgantown, North Marion, Parkersburg (2 teams), Parkersburg South (two teams), Pocahontas County, Ripley, Roane County, St. Mary’s (two teams), University, Warren (2 teams), Wheeling Central, Wheeling Park, Williamstown, Winfield and Wirt County.
