Watkins takes WVGA Senior Series Low Round at Bridgehaven Golf Club

Frank Watkins of Lewisburg shot Wednesday’s Little General Stores Low Round of the Day at the Senior Series event, hosted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA) and sponsored by Little General Stores, at Bridgehaven Golf Club in Fayetteville at one over par 72.

The West Virginia Senior Series, which is presented by Little General Stores and conducted by the WVGA, is for players ages 50 and up.

“We’re excited to host this WVGA event, our first in over a decade,” said Bridgehaven’s co-owner Josh Howell.  “We sit at the edge of the National Park and near the New River Gorge Bridge, so it’s a beautiful area.  Our front nine is flat, while the back nine is hillier and more rolling.  The course has come back overall and the greens have always been good. We’ve got several ponds, so that certainly helps with watering.”

Overall, 43 players enjoyed the WVGA the day’s Senior Series event.  Categories are: Senior, 50-59; Silver, 60-69; Gold, 70-79; and Diamond, 80+.

“It’s nice to visit a course that’s new to me, and Bridgehaven has been a delight today,” said WVGA Director of Women’s Golf and One Day Series Sarah Cole.

In addition to Watkins winning the Gold Gross category, other winners today were:

  • Senior Gross: John Ridenour of Long Bottom, Ohio, (+4) 75;
  • Senior Net: Stuart Scott of Beckley, (-1) 70;
  • Silver Gross: Jeff Hughes of Scarbro, (+3) 74;
  • Silver Net: Mark Eggleton of Hurricane, (-5) 66; and
  • Gold Net: Butch Freeman of Daniels, (-1) 70.
