The first qualifier for the 105th WV Amateur Championship, presented by Astorg Motor Company and Mercedes-Benz of Charleston and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), took place May 6 at Wheeling Country Club. Mario Saludes of Wheeling was the Medalist of Monday’s qualifier with a three under par 67.
“I’m excited to earn low medalist and for the opportunity to try and win the WV Amateur. I am now unretired!” Saludes said.
Other major presenters include United Bank and The Greenbrier.
Over 400 golfers from West Virginia have registered to qualify for this year’s Amateur Championship. There were 23 players competing May 6 for six qualifying spots and two alternates in the Championship. The other qualifying players from today were:
- Campbell Koegler of Wheeling, (+1) 71;
- Justin Doerr of Wheeling, (+1) 71;
- Bob Clark of Wheeling, (+2) 72;
- Louis Bruzda of Barboursville, (+2) 72; and
- Jay Davis of St. Clairsville, Ohio.
The alternates are Gabriel Watson and Hunter Graham, both of Morgantown.
“We’re happy to host the first West Virginia Amateur Qualifier of the season and to see the field expand to 30,” said Wheeling’s General Manager and Head Golf Professional Rich Conwell. “It’s a tough course for these players with thick rough. It’s not flat.”
“We’re very happy to be at Wheeling Country Club to help determine our field for the West Virginia Amateur Championship, presented by Astorg Auto and Mercedes-Benz,” said WVGA Executive Director Chris Slack. “With today’s field of players, we’re pleased these seven premier courses in West Virginia are hosting our qualifiers.”
The remaining qualifying dates and locations are:
May 7 at Edgewood Country Club, Sissonville;
May 9 at Locust Hill Golf Course in Charles Town;
May 13 at Bridgeport Country Club, Bridgeport;
May 16 at Pipestem Resort and State Park, Pipestem;
May 20 at Guyan Golf and Country Club, Huntington; and
May 22 “Last Chance Qualifier” at Stonewall Resort, Roanoke.
The 105th Amateur Championship will take place May 26-29 at The Greenbrier, which has hosted the event 97 of the past 104 years.
