First day of WV Junior Amateur Championship sees several ties

The West Virginia Junior Amateur Championship, for players under 18 and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), started Monday at Canaan Valley Resort in Davis with a field of 89 players.

Argyle Downes of Charles Town and McCartney Hinkle of Bluefield, Va., finished the first day in a tie for the Boys’ Championship lead at three under par 69.  Adam Gill of Wheeling and Carson Higginbotham of Clarksburg are tied for third at two under par 70, while Jackson Woodburn is in firth at one under par 71.

In the Girls Championship Division, Savannah Hawkins of Hurricane and Kerri-Anne Cook of Oceana are tied for the lead at five over par 77.  Madilyn Buttrey of Williamstown is in third at 13 over par 85, followed by Scarlett Albertson of Charleston at 14 over par 86 and McKenzie Armstrong of Belmont at 15 over par 87.

Parker O’Dell of Hurricane is leading the boys 13-14 division, while Campbell Hettlinger of Huntington is leading the girls 10-14 division and Jude Walker of Mount Zion is leading the boys 12 and under division.
