First day of WV Junior Amateur Championship sees close finishes

The West Virginia Junior Amateur Championship, for players under 18 and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), started Monday at Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington.

Jack Michael of Huntington finished the first day with a one stroke lead over Adam Gill of Wheeling and Jackson Woodburn of Scott Depot, who scored five birdies Monday.  Michael leads the boys championship division at even par 71, while Gill and Woodburn are one stroke behind at one over par 72.

In the girls championship division, Taylor Sargent of Milton has a two stroke lead over Kerri-Anne Cook of Oceana.  Sargent scored three birdies on her way to two over par 73, while Cook finished at four over par 75.

Parker O’Dell of Hurricane is leading the boys 13-14 division, while Audrey Kerr of Bridgeport is leading the girls 10-14 division and Jude Walker of Mount Zion is leading the boys 12 and under division.
