The West Virginia Junior Amateur Championship, for players under 18 and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), continued Wednesday at Canaan Valley Resort in Davis with a field of 93 players. Champions in three divisions were crowned today.
Champions in the age ranges are:
- Boys 13-14 division: Jude Walker of Elizabeth, (-1) 143,
- Girls 10-14 division: Valentina Aguilar of Elkins, (+31) 175; and
- Boys 12 and under division: Graydi Flohr of Daniels, (+24) 168.
“It’s exciting for these young golfers to have this opportunity to come out and play on this challenging course,” said Canaan’s Mary Kay. “The course is in great shape. It’s green and growing, especially with yesterday’s rain, and mowing is an ongoing challenge.”
“Jude played a great round and finished (-2) over his final five holes to come away with the win over Bentley Shirkey, who also played well today. Congratulations to Valentina and Graydi, too,” said WVGA’s Director of Junior Golf and Core Services Lucas Ware. “We’re excited that the weather was more cooperative today.”
Tommy Evans of Charles Town maintains his four-stroke lead over the Boys’ Championship field, finishing the second day at 15 under par (-15) 129. Jack Michael of Huntington is four strokes back in second at 11 under par (-11) 133, followed by McCartney Hinkle of Bluefield, Va., in third at six under par (-6) 138, and Isaac Hayes of Hurricane in fourth at five under par (-5) 139. Tied for fifth at three under par (-3) 141 are Stephen McDavid of Scott Depot and Isaac Hutchison of Lewisburg.
In the Girls Championship Division, Chastyn Viars of South Charleston holds a six-stroke lead at 15 over par (+15) 159 over yesterday’s leader Lexi Green of Charleston in second at 21 over par (+21) 165. Tied for third at 22 over par (+22) 166 are McKenzie Armstrong of Belmont and Audrey Kerr of Bridgeport. Rounding out the top five, at 26 over par (26) 170, is Alana Hamaty of Bluefield.
