Fourth Third Qualifier for 106th WV Amateur Championship Adds 20

The fourth of six qualifiers for the 106th WV Amateur Championship, presented by Astorg Auto and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), took place on May 20 at Edgewood Country Clun in Sissonville. Bailey Beckwith of Huntington earned today’s Medalist honors, finishing at even par (E) 71.

Over 400 golfers from West Virginia have registered to qualify for this year’s Amateur Championship.  There were 68 players competing Tuesday for 20 qualifying spots and two alternates in the Championship.  The other qualifying players from today were:

  • Stephen McDavid of Scott Depot, (+1) 72;
  • Tanner Vest of Shady Spring, (+1) 72;
  • Justin McCarter of Parkersburg, (+2) 73;
  • Andrew Johnson of Hurricane, (+2) 73;
  • Trenton Roush of New Haven, (+2) 73;
  • Cooper Ward of Beaver, (+3) 74;
  • Brian Myers of Julian, (+3) 74;
  • Matthew Carney of Barboursville, (+3) 74;
  • Evan Conard of Charleston, (+4) 75;
  • Troy Leport of Huntington, (+4) 75;
  • Max Bowen of Elkview, (+4) 75;
  • John Bumgarner of Scott Depot, (+4) 75;
  • Sammy Shy of Huntington, (+5) 76;
  • Hunter Heath of Roanoke, (+5) 76;
  • Mike Keiffer of Scott Depot, (+5) 76;
  • Chris Bohach of Ona, (+5) 76;
  • Wyatt Burgess of Hurricane, (+5) 76;
  • Jared Nelson of South Charleston, (+5) 76; and
  • Mike Veres of Logan, (+5) 76.

The alternates are Mason Weese of Charleston and Parker Vannoy of Mineral Wells.

“We’re honored to have so many players here, especially so many up-and-coming young players, and we’ve been looking forward to today,” said Edgewood’s Head Golf Professional Craig Berner.  “The greens are rolling close to 10 and Kenny Eggelston has the course in great shape.”

“We appreciate Edgewood hosting our fourth qualifier, and the cloudy conditions were a benefit,” said WVGA Executive Director Chris Slack.  “Craig Berner, Kenny Eggelston and the Edgewood staff do a great job with the course.”

The remaining qualifying dates and locations are:

  • May 22 at Esquire Golf Course, Barboursville; and
  • May 29 “Last Chance Qualifier” at Stonewall Resort, Roanoke.

The 106th Amateur Championship will take place June 1-4 at The Greenbrier, which has hosted the event 98 of the past 106 years.
