A field of 80 golfers, 40 teams, from around the country teed off Thursday morning at Edgewood Country Club in Sissonville hoping to earn one of two qualifying spots or one of two alternate spots in the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball qualifier. The West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), in support and collaboration with the United States Golf Association (USGA), conducted the event.
At the end of the day, West Virginia teams claimed both alternate positions. The team of Mason Weese of Charleston and Mitch Hoffman of Hurricane finished at six under par 65, followed by the team of Jared Taylor of Bluefield and Jess Ferrell of Fairmont at five under par 66.
Claiming the two qualifying positions were Timothy Barto and Andrew Furr, both of Charlotte, NC, at seven under par 64, followed by Harrison Rhoades and Nolan Mills, both of Raleigh, NC. The team of Rhoades and Mills earned their spot following a playoff with the team of Weese and Hoffman.
“We had some great talent on the course today and are thrilled to see two West Virginia teams finish so well. It’s great to have people from all over the country and show them our part of West Virgnia,” said Edgewood’s Head Golf Professional Craig Berner. “Weather conditions have taken a toll on the course, but it was still in good condition.”
“We are honored to host one of the US Amateur Four-Ball qualifiers across the country,” said WVGA Executive Director Chris Slack. “I’m always amazed to see where our participants call home. In our field of 80 players, nearly a quarter of whom were from West Virginia, we had players from nine other states and Germany. We’re glad for the chance to let them experience the beauty and hospitality of West Virginia.”
