The 51st playing of the West Virginia Women’s Senior Amateur Championship, conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), got underway Monday on the Cobb Course at The Resort at Glade Springs.
Melanie Collins of Parkersburg fired a six over par 78 for the lead in the Championship division in the overall field of 44 golfers.
“The WVGA always enjoys coming to Glade Springs,” said WVGA Director of Women’s Golf and One Day Series Sarah Cole. “There were al lot of good shots during the first day and I’m looking forward to the championship round tomorrow.”
Glade Springs Head Golf Professional Kyle Long said, “The course is good and a bit firm, as are the greens. We’re looking forward to showing off the course to the best women golfers in the state.”
Leaders in other divisions after the first day are:
- Championship Net: Karen Kinnett of Shepherdstown and Collins, (-3) 69;
- First Flight Gross: Janice Allen and Janie Webber, both of Daniels, (+20) 92;
- First Flight Net: Mary Cavendish of Daniels, (-3) 69;
- Second Flight Gross: Lori Vargo of Daniels, Annie Kinker of Daniels and Carolyn Outman of Hurricane, (+29) 101;
- Second Flight Net: Misty Jeckering of Summersville and Kim Murphy of Winfield, (+3) 75;
- Super Senior First Flight Gross: Drema Watts of St. Albans, (+14) 86;
- Super Senior First Flight Net: Esther Joo of Summersville, (-3) 69;
- Super Senior Second Flight Gross: Becky Brogan of Hurricane, (+33) 105; and
- Super Senior Second Flight Net: Lois Kineer of Hurricane, (+2) 74.
The final day of competition features a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m.
