91st West Virginia Open qualifying battled heat at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club

The second of six state-wide qualifiers for the 91st West Virginia Open Championship fought the heat at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club in Hurricane on Monday.  Hoping to qualify for one of 16 spots or two alternate positions in the Championship later this month, 63 golfers teed off this morning.

“We are excited to have such a large field and so many of our members among the players,” said Sleepy Hollow’s Head Golf Professional Jimmy Harrison.

Tying for Medalist Honors were John Bumgarner and Chris Williams, both of Scott Depot, who finished at one under par 71.  Other qualifiers were:

  • Gavin Martin of Scott Depot, (E) 72;
  • Chris Bohach of Ona, (+1) 73;
  • Brandon Fivecoait of Vincent, Ohio, (+2) 74;
  • Matthew Carney of Barboursville, (+2) 74;
  • Cade Burgess of Charleston, (+2) 74;
  • Kellen Pauley of Hurricane, (+2) 74;
  • Wyatt Burgess of Hurricane, (+3) 75;
  • Andrew Johnson of Hurricane, (+3) 75;
  • Joshua Gooden of Hurricane, (+3) 75;
  • Jason Grimmett of Hurricane, (+3) 75;
  • Mike Keiffer of Scott Depot, (+4) 76;
  • Tyler Shamblin of Elkview, (+4) 76;
  • Brian Stuck of St. Albans, (+4) 76; and
  • JT Rowsey of Culloden, (+5) 77.

Alternates are Nikolas Tomblin of Alum Creek and Brian Khoury of Charleston.

“We thank the staff at Sleepy Hollow for taking extra precautions for the safety of our golfers playing in this heat,” said WVGA Executive Director Chris Slack. “The WV Open features the best amateur and professional golfers in West Virginia. Our first day at Riverside Golf Club was outstanding, as was today at Sleepy Hollow.  We look forward to the remaining qualifiers across the state.”
