36th WVGA Parent-Child Tournament Sees Tight Finishes Across the Board

The 36th WV Parent-Child Championship, conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), concluded Sunday on both the Cobb Course at The Resort at Glade Springs and the Stonehaven Course at Glade Springs Village.  All Flights but one were decided by one or two strokes.  Mother-Child Division winners took their Flight by nine strokes.

The father-son team of Doug and Chris Williams of Scott Depot Hurricane broke the first day’s tie in the Championship Flight to win the tournament by two strokes, finishing at 22 under par (-22) 122.  They were followed by the team of David and Joshua Bumgarner of Scott Depot in second at 20 under par (-2) 124.  Tied for third at 17 under par 127 were the teams of Jim and Adam Cyrus of Huntington and Sam and Parker O’Dell of Hurricane.  Tied for fifth at 16 under par (-16) 128 were the teams of Seth and Sam Kinker of Huntington and Josh Howell of Fayetteville and Rob Howell of Ansted.

Close finishes were recorded in the other Flights:

  • The team of Randall Rogers and Mason Humphrey of Vienna won First Flight by one stroke, finishing at 16 under par (-16) 128;
  • Second Flight saw Mark and Brandon Tolliver of Lesage finish at 13 under par (-13) 131, winning by one stroke over the next four teams;

In the Mother-Child Division, Linda and Jared Taylor of Bluefield defended their 2023 and 2024 wins with a 10 under par (-1) 134, nine strokes ahead of their competition.

The Extended Family Division saw winners Kellen and Jason Pauley of Hurricane finish at 11 under par (-11) 133, winning the Flight by one stroke.

“This is one of our largest events of the year, with nearly 250 players, and it sells out in a matter of minutes,” said Glade Springs Resort’s Assistant Golf Professional Cole Moore.  “It’s fun to see family members playing together.  I played in it for nearly a decade, and it’s one of my favorite golf memories.”

The 36-hole Championship featured a sold-out field of 240 players competing on the Glade Springs Resort’s Cobb Course and The Village at Glade Springs Stonehaven Course. The format is a two-person scramble and tees are based off each player’s age. Each team must count at least six tee shots from each team member. This Championship also featured an Extended Family Division and a Mother-Child Division.
