The 35th WV Parent-Child Championship, conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), concluded Sunday on both the Cobb Course at The Resort at Glade Springs and the Stonehaven Course at Glade Springs Village.
The father-daughter team of Larry and Savannah Hawkins of Hurricane extended their lead in the Championship Flight from at 11 under to 22 under par 122. They were followed by the team of David and Joshua Bumgarner of Scott Depot in second at 18 under par 126. Tied for third at 17 under par 127 were the teams of tad and Nik Tomblin of Alum Creek, Sam and Parker O’Dell of Hurricane and Andrew Call of Buckhannon and Drew Call of Shepherdstown.
Ties were broken following the first day’s action in the other Flights:
- The team of Doug and Chris Williams of Scott Depot broke a seven-team tie for first with a total 17 under par 127 to take First Flight;
- Second Flight, which has a 14-team tie for first after day one, saw Tommy and Timmy Kirk of Morgantown take honors at 12 under par 132 in a scorecard playoff against Owen and Garland Elliott of Falling Waters;
- Third Flight saw the team of David and David Wolfe, Sr. finish at 11 under par 133 to break a first-day 10-team tie for first;
- Fourth Flight saw the team of Will and William Johnson of Charleston finish at 10 under par 134 to break Saturday’s 10-team tie for first at one under par 71;
- Brett and Blake Hunt of Fairmont finished at one under par 143 to break a five-team tie for first in Fifth Flight; and
- Sixth Flight saw Matt and Mahkai Grose of Daniels finish at three over par 147 to break a three-way tie for first Saturday.
In the Mother-Child Division, Linda and Jared Taylor of Bluefield defended their 2023 win with a nine under par 135.
The Extended Family Division saw winners Ben Ramsey and Jerry Turley of Bluefield, Va., finish at 15 under par 129.
“We’ve hosted this event in prior years,” said Glade Springs Resort’s Head Golf Professional Kyle Long. “It’s always a good field and a good test for the golfers, as shown by the number of ties at the end of Saturday.”
The 36-hole Championship featured a sold-out field of 230 players competing on the Glade Springs Resort’s Cobb Course and The Village at Glade Springs Stonehaven Course. The format is a two-person scramble and tees are based off each player’s age. Each team must count at least six tee shots from each team member. This Championship also features an Extended Family Division and a Mother-Child Division.
