The second of five statewide qualifiers for the 98th West Virginia Amateur presented by Mercedes-Benz took place on Friday at Greenhills Country Club in Ravenswood. The field of thirty players were looking to claim one of the twelve qualifying spots into the championship to be contested June 12th-15th at The Resort at Glade Springs. After a week full of rain and thunderstorms, absolutely perfect temperatures and conditions welcomed the players as they began their morning rounds.
Matthew Sisson (Sissonville), Chris Eddy (Belmont), and Tim Mount (Huntington) all posted rounds of 2-over, 74, to tie for medalist honors. Sisson’s round began with a front-nine 38 but he battled back on the back to post an even-par, 36, on his way to 74. Chris Eddy turned at even-par before carding three bogeys and a birdie on the back nine placing him in a tie for medalist at 74. Tim Mount found trouble early in his round as carded five bogeys and two birdies on his front nine to turn at three over-par. He quickly righted the ship on the back nine with a one under-par, 35, on his way to a tie for medalist honors. As afternoon winds beginning to gusts, scores began to rise bringing back into contention several players who felt they were out of qualifying. Once all scores had been posted the cut fell at 81 giving us the twelve individuals who have advanced into the Championship next month.
The West Virginia Amateur is proud to again be presented by Mercedes-Benz and all of the great dealers here in West Virginia: Astorg Auto of Charleston, Astorg Auto of Parkersburg, and Mercedes-Benz of Morgantown.
