Sleepy Hollow Golf Club in Hurricane saw 19 golfers qualify on July 12 for the 102nd WV Amateur Championship, presented by Astorg Motor Company and Mercedes-Benz of Charleston and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA).
With a one under par 71, Jacob Nickell of Wheeling and Anderson Goldman of Charleston were Co-Medalists of the third qualifier.
“We have a lot of good players here and it gives our players a chance to compete in one of the biggest events of the year,” said Sleepy Hollow Golf Club Head Golf Professional Jimmy Harrison.
Over 400 golfers from West Virginia have registered to qualify for this year’s Amateur Championship, including six past champions. 67 of those players competed July 12 for 19 spots in the Championship. The other 17 qualifying players from today were: Nathan Kinker, Barboursville; Evan Smith, Bluefield; Gary Cooper, Brian Khoury, Matthew Stump and John Logan Taylor, Charleston; Todd Harris, Culloden; Tyler Shamblin, Elkview; Mark Cross and Jack Michael, Huntington; Wyatt Burgess, Hurricane; Ben Fletcher, Milton; Ben Palmer, Parkersburg; Jason Holstein and Mike Keiffer, Scott Depot; Kyle Wensel, Wheeling; and Walker Dent, White Sulphur Springs.
The remaining qualifying dates and locations are:
July 16th at Pipestem State Park, Pipestem
July 18th at Riverside Golf Club, Mason
July 22nd at The Pines Country Club, Morgantown
July 28th “Last Chance Qualifier” July 28th at Greenhills Country Club, Ravenswood
The Amateur Championship will take place August 1-4 at The Greenbrier, which has hosted the event 94 of the past 101 years.
