(Roanoke, WV) The 2016 state championships season kicked off today at the Arnold Palmer designed Stonewall Resort located in Roanoke, WV. In all, 50 teams which included three divisions (Championship, Senior, Women’s) headed into today’s opening round looking to stake an early lead right out of the gate. Even with an unfavorable weather forecast, players were welcomed with dry and calm conditions which set the stage for many teams to light up the leaderboard with red numbers.
Leading the Championship Division is the team of Philip Reale II and Jess Ferrell who carded an opening round of eleven (11) under-par, 61. Their bogey free round places them two shots ahead of the team of Sam O’Dell and Pat Carter who fired an opening round of 63. Sitting in a three-way tie for third are the teams of Fluharty/Palmer, Roush/Roush, and Frazier/Roam who all posted eight under-par, 64. Out of the forty-one (41) teams in the Championship Division, thirty-three teams found themselves under par.
In the Senior Division it was the team of Jay Kaufman and Scott Bibbee who have a one stroke lead heading into tomorrow’s final round. Sitting in a three-way tie for second is Stemple/Metz, Daniel Acord, and VanHorn/Moore who all carded four (4) under-par rounds of 68.
Leading the Women’s Division is Nicolle Flood-Sawczyszyn and her partner Shelley Hyde who have a four (4) shot lead heading into tomorrow. Their bogey free round included four birdies on the front nine and one on the back. Tied for second are the teams of Maroney/Goldcamp and Wright/Bowling who both carded under par rounds of 71.
