Philip Reale Takes Command at the 102nd WV Amateur Championship

Philip Reale of Hurricane fired a third round 65 on the Meadows Course to take the lead of the 102nd West Virginia Amateur Championship. Reale got off to a hot start with an eagle on the par 5 fourth, followed by four birdies and just one bogey on the card.

Reale got off to a hot start with an eagle on the par 5 fourth, followed by four birdies and just one bogey on the card. Making a back nine charge in round three was Morgantown’s Chris Williams. Williams went 7 under par in his last 12 holes to secure second place, just one shot back of Reale. In the final grouping tomorrow, joining Reale and Williams, is South Charleston’s Joseph Kalaskey. Kalaskey fired a third round 66 on his way to a 54-hole stroke total of 208. The Final Round will take place tomorrow on The Old White course with the first starting time at 8:00am. The trophy presentation will take place on the first tee of The Old White tomorrow approximately 3:00pm.

Round Three of the 102^nd WV Amateur Championship, presented by Astorg Motor Company and Mercedes-Benz of Charleston, sponsored by United Bank and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), teed off this morning on the Meadows Course at The Greenbrier.

“The Meadows provided a difficult challenge today, but these amazing golfers handled it well,” said Robert Harris, vice president of golf at The Greenbrier.  “The final round is going to be an exciting one, and there’s no better place to crown a champion than on the Old White.”

While speaking at another event at The Greenbrier, Gov. Justice was asked to comment on the West Virginia Amateur Championship.  He said, “I’ve played this tournament, and played with Bill Campbell, so I’m glad the tournament is here again.”

“This is the largest and most prestigious golf event in West Virginia and gives the WVGA and The Greenbrier the opportunity to build this game in West Virginia, from programs for children and young people to this pinnacle of West Virginia golf,” said Astorg Auto CEO Paul Astorg.  “We’re pleased that Mercedes Benz and United Bank are joining us in making golf better in our state.”

The 102^nd West Virginia Amateur will conclude August 4^st at The Greenbrier, which has hosted the event 94 of the past 101 years.
