The West Virginia Junior Amateur Championship, for players under 18 and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), concluded the first day of play at Bridgeport Country Club.
Leaders after the first of two days of play are Argyle Downes, of Charles Town, leading the boys’ championship division, and Savannah Hawkins, of Hurricane, leading the girls’ championship division. Hawkins is the tournament’s defending girls’ champion and Downes has reached Eagle Level in the First Tee-West Virginia program.
“I played well, although I had a rough couple holes, but I came back with some birdies and I’m happy to be leading,” Downes said. Hawkins, admitted she didn’t play her best, but said, “I am happy to have a one shot lead heading into the final round tomorrow and look forward to a good challenge.”
“Our course is in good playing condition for all players. Our five par fives and five par threes make the course interesting,” said Director of Bridgeport Country Club VJ Baldini. “We’ve supported our youth since Larry Martin started the Top Flite Callaway Tour.”
Head Golf Pro Mike Gervais added, “We are very excited to host the Junior Amateur Championship for these 53 players throughout the state. This is a family facility, and it’s great to have some of our own young players in the field.”
The final day of the WV Junior Amateur Championship begins Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
