Heading into her sophomore year at Ohio State University, Adeena Shears of Parkersburg seems to have her game exactly where she wants it. Amateur Champion in 2014 and 2015, Shears looked to close out a wire-to-wire victory today in the 94th WV Women’s Amateur Championship which was held at Guyan Golf & Country Club in Huntington. As good weather set the stage for a great championship all week long it was Shears who dominated the field and cruised to an eight shot victory to claim her third Amateur title in four years.

Heading into today’s final round Adeena Shears found herself sleeping on a five shot lead. The pressure of a wire-to-wire victory that you would expect to see from most players never showed in Shears though. Her final round was as steady and methodic as it could have possibly been as she opened her final round with nine straight pars. Extending that lead over the field, Shears opened her closing nine with a birdie on the par-4 tenth and an eagle on the par-5 eleventh. Her stellar play up to this point had afforded her a ten shot lead with just a few holes remaining. Her final round wasn’t flawless though. Shears found trouble on the par-3 fifteenth and made a double bogey. She then finished her title run with a bogey on the eighteenth but it didn’t matter. Shears final round of even-par 71 gave her a tournament total of three under-par, 210 which is eight shots better than runner-up finisher Nicolle Flood-Sawczyszyn of Morgantown who finished at five over-par, 218. Flood-Sawczyszyn played extremely well all week as she was paired with Shears every round of the three day competition. Round of 69, 76, 73 just weren’t quite enough to keep the pressure on Shears coming down the stretch. Claiming third was Kimberly Eaton who finished the championship at eight over-par, 221. South Charleston junior golfer, Torren Kalaskey, finished fourth at 227 and Lipscomb University golfer Lauryn Davidson finished fifth at 228.

Following the second round of championship play the field was divided into three different flights – Championship, Flight 1, Flight 2. Claiming medalist honors in the First Flight was Tina Phillips who posted a tournament total of 250. At a tie for runner-up honors in the First Flight was Kelsey Allbright and Dorothy Romanek who found themselves one shot back at 251. Claiming medalist honors in the Second Flight was Teresa Harper who posted a tournament total 274 and taking runner-up was Kathy Chesley at 277.
