The fourth of seven state-wide qualifiers for the 89th West Virginia Open Championship took place Friday at Wheeling Country Club. A field of 15 golfers started the day hoping to obtain one of five spots available today leading to the final field of the West Virginia Open which will take place at Stonewall Resort later this month.
Earning Medalist Honors was Yadhu Urs of Wheeling who finished with a one over par 71. “I’m happy to be playing in the WVOPEN,” said Urs, who is a member of Wheeling College’s golf team. “This is my home course, so I’m happy there was a qualifier here.”
“We’re really excited to host this event. We’ve hosted two WVOPEN’s over the years and even a PGA Tour event back in 1937,” said Wheeling’s General Manager and Head Golf Pro Rich Conwell. “We had strong players from the local area and regionally. We thought it would take some birdies to make the cut, and Yadhu scored three of them.”
Other qualifiers were:
- Justin Doerr of Wheeling, (+3) 73;
- Noah Seivertson of Wheeling, (+3) 73;
- David Sims of Wheeling, (+5) 75; and
- Garrett Simon of Spencer, (+5) 75.
The WVOPEN Championship has a rich 88-year history. Legendary professional golfer Sam Snead holds the record for the most WV OPEN victories at 17. The defending champion is 12-time winner David Bradshaw. The WV OPEN features the best amateur and professional golfers in West Virginia, competing for over $30,000 in prizes.
