The 49th Playing of the West Virginia Women’s Senior Amateur Championship, conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), got underway Monday at Pipestem Resort State Park.

Three-time Champion Karen Kinnett of Shepherdstown fired a four over par 76 to lead the field of 46 golfers. Daneen Shears of Elizabeth is currently in second place shooting a 79 and defending champion Lisa Younis of Shepherdstown fired an opening round of nine over par 81.

One of the fun games within Women’s Senior Amateur Championship is the “fewest putts” competition. Stacey Duty had 28 putts during the round and took home the prize.

“The WVGA always enjoys hosting state championships and events at State Park golf courses in West Virginia,” said WVGA Executive Director Brad Ullman.

Pipestem Resort Director of Golf Steve Robertson said, “We have the ladies these two days then the senior men on Thursday. We are always delighted to have the WVGA here.”

Groupings are posted at wvga.org for tomorrow’s final round. Play will begin with a 9 o’clock shotgun start with the featured groups starting on hole number one.
