A chilly start to the 2022 West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA) greeted the sold-out field of 112 golfers at the Two-Person Scramble event on the Palmer Course at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling on Saturday.
“Temperatures dipped into the mid-30s all day, with a combination of rain, sleet and snow throughout the day,” said WVGA Executive Director Brad Ullman.
Leaders on the men’s side at the end of day one play were Cam Roam and Sam O’Dell, both of Huntington, with a nine under par 62. “Conditions were brutal. Cam hit the ball great and came through with a couple of his best shots when I needed him the most,” O’Dell said. “I putted the ball well today. We feel like we left a few out there but, all things considered, we were happy with our start.”
Behind them, tied for second, were the teams of Nick Alex of Bridgeport/Ian Hogue of Clarksburg and Seth Kinder of Daniels/Mark Wilcox of Huntington.
Leaders on the women’s side were Kathleen Wong of Parkersburg and Susan Glasby of Huntington, leading by eight after shooting a seven under par 64. “We played really well for the most part,” Wong said. “We ham and egged it good, missed in the right spots and didn’t make any big mistakes.”
In the Senior Division, Jay Kaufmann of Mineral Wells and Patrick Allen of Pennsboro have a one-shot lead with a four under par 67 over defending Senior Division champions Tim Mount of Huntington and Van Stemple of Shepherdstown. “It was brutally hard today with the weather,” Kaufmann said. “We had rain, sleet, snow and sunshine.”
“We are excited to host the first WVGA event of the 2022 season,” said Oglebay’s General Manager of Golf Operations Danny Ackerman. “There are excellent conditions on both the Palmer and Jones courses, but they’re a little soft because of recent rains.”
Other highlights of the day included Susan Glasby of Huntington and Cathleen Wong of Parkersburg each scoring seven birdies and one eagle during the first day of play. In addition, the leading team of Roam/O’Dell scored a combined 10 birdies, while the Kinker/Wilcox team scored nine birdies and Alex/Hogue scored eight birdies.
Sunday’s final round will be a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start.
