The 2021 WV Women’s Amateur Champion, Cathleen Wong, and her partner Ben Palmer fired an opening round 31 and 32 to lead after round one. The pair fired an impressive five under par 31 on the opening nine during the Alternate Shot format.
“We had fun,” said Wong. “We played well and hope we play just as good tomorrow.” Wong and Palmer have a two-stroke lead over Huntington’s Susan Glasby and her partner Cory Bruzda, who opened round one with scores of 35 and 30. There are a total of 15 pairs, 30 players, competing in this year’s tournament.
“Having the WVGA here at Pipestem for State Championships is always a pleasure,” said Director of Golf Steve Robertson. “We are very happy with the course conditions and hope everyone who is part of the event has a great time.”
Today’s format was: Alternate Shot (foursome rules) on the front nine, where both golfers hit their tee shot, then select the best shot and alternate who plays until the ball is holed. Shamble rules applied to the back nine. Players select the best tee shot of the two and play their own ball from that point until the ball is holed. The ball may be placed within one club-length, but no closer to the hole, and must stay in the same cut of turf. The lowest score of the two is the team score for the hole.
