With a one under par 70, Tanner Elliott and Christopher Neighbors, both of Charles Town, were Co-Medalists of the second qualifier.

Seven golfers stamped their tickets to the 102nd WV Amateur Championship, presented by Astorg Motor Company and Mercedes-Benz of Charleston and conducted by the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), on July 8 at Locust Hill Golf Course in Charles Town.   With a one under par 70, Tanner Elliott and Christopher Neighbors, both of Charles Town, were Co-Medalists of the second qualifier.

“I played good today, especially the back 9.” Elliott said.  “It was tough, but I am glad to be in the Championship.”  Neighbors said, “Today wasn’t easy, but I played really well.  I hope I can keep this momentum going into the Championship at The Greenbrier.”  Neighbors is a former member of the First Tee of West Virginia at Locust Hill and is now a college golfer for Shepherd University.

Over 400 golfers from West Virginia have registered to qualify for this year’s Amateur Championship, including six past champions.  30 of those players competed July 8 for seven spots in the Championship.  The other five qualifying players from today were:  Tyler Hardy and Terry Mumaw of Charles Town; Ryan Crabtree and Steve Eckert of Falling Waters; and John D. Francisco of Shepherdstown.

“We support junior and amateur golf across the state, and especially in the Eastern Panhandle,” said Wayne Clark, owner and general manager of Locust Hill Golf Course.  “For us, it’s an exciting golf event to host and the 30 players today were the most in recent memory for this area.  We’ve really grown our membership in terms of playing ability, as shown by 15-year-old Argyle Downes and others.”

July 12th at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club, Hurricane

July 16th at Pipestem State Park, Pipestem

July 18th at Riverside Golf Club, Mason

July 22nd at The Pines Country Club, Morgantown

July 28th “Last Chance Qualifier” July 28th at Greenhills Country Club, Ravenswood

The Amateur Championship will take place August 1-4 at The Greenbrier, which has hosted the event 94 of the past 101 years.
