Marshall’s Thomas Frazier Medals as 23 Players Qualify for the 98th WV Amateur presented by Mercedes-Benz

The final qualifier for the 98^th WV Amateur presented by Mercedes-Benz took place on Monday at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club. A total of fifty-three players teed off looking to claim one of twenty-three spots into the championship to be contested next week, June 12^th-15^th, at the Resort at Glade Springs – Cobb course. Steady rain and occasional downpours wreaked havoc on the field and the only let-up came as play was drawing to an end.

Thomas Frazier of Huntington and Marshall University’s Men’s Golf Team conquered the tough conditions, posting a round of even-par, 72. Frazier fired an inward nine score of two-under, 34, on his way to claiming medalist honors and clearing second place by four strokes. Twenty-three players finished at 82 or better to secure their spot into the championship field. A sudden-death playoff ensued on #9 for the 1^st Alternate and 2^nd Alternate at 83. Cole Hand, Jed Powell, J. Christopher Kroeger, and Donny Smith all made pars on the first playoff hole and went back to #9 to continue. On the second playoff hole, Cole Hand and Donny Smith made pars, while Jed Powell and J. Christopher Kroeger settled for bogey and were eliminated. The playoff then moved to #10 where Cole Hand of Wheeling and West Virginia University’s Men’s Golf Team made birdie to finish as the 1^st Alternate, making Donny Smith the 2^nd Alternate.
