The final qualifier for the 98th WV Amateur presented by Mercedes-Benz took place on Monday at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club. A total of fifty-three players teed off looking to claim one of twenty-three spots into the championship to be contested next week, June 12th-15th, at the Resort at Glade Springs – Cobb course. Steady rain and occasional downpours wreaked havoc on the field and the only let-up came as play was drawing to an end.

Thomas Frazier of Huntington and Marshall University’s Men’s Golf Team conquered the tough conditions, posting a round of even-par, 72. Frazier fired an inward nine score of two-under, 34, on his way to claiming medalist honors and clearing second place by four strokes. Twenty-three players finished at 82 or better to secure their spot into the championship field. A sudden-death playoff ensued on #9 for the 1st Alternate and 2nd Alternate at 83. Cole Hand, Jed Powell, J. Christopher Kroeger, and Donny Smith all made pars on the first playoff hole and went back to #9 to continue. On the second playoff hole, Cole Hand and Donny Smith made pars, while Jed Powell and J. Christopher Kroeger settled for bogey and were eliminated. The playoff then moved to #10 where Cole Hand of Wheeling and West Virginia University’s Men’s Golf Team made birdie to finish as the 1st Alternate, making Donny Smith the 2nd Alternate.
