(Daniels, WV) If you’ve ever wondered where the so-called “golf gods” reside, a safe bet this weekend would have been at The Resort at Glade Springs as the weather forecast heading into this weekend’s WV Parent-Child Championship was less than favorable. As heavy rains and flooding have hit many portions of West Virginia this past week even causing the postponement of WV Junior Amateur at Edgewood Country Club, it looked as though that completing the 36-hole championship was going to be a difficult task of dodging the summer time pop-ups. Following a successful Round 1, round two began Sunday with the skies opening up and dumping over an inch of rain on the resort just before the players began to arrive. As the threat of storms loomed around the noon hour, wave upon wave of pop-up thunderstorms took a direct line to Daniels but as they approached 30 miles out from the resort seemed to either vanish or split and move around the area. Except for a 15 minute shower that was just long enough to cool things off, the players managed to complete the final round under sunny skies!
Historically the WV Parent-Child Championship is the largest championship that the WVGA conducts and this year was no different as there were 90 two-man teams entered to compete in several divisions including the Amateur, Mother-Child, and Extended Family. Taking up two golf courses, The Cobb and Stonehaven Courses, the weekend is full of family fun and comradery as the players compete in a scramble format. Claiming the overall championship victory was the team of Sam and Seth Kinker who followed their opening round of 65 (Stonehaven) with an eight under-par 64 (Cobb) for a tournament total of fifteen under-par, 129. Finishing just one shot behind was the Round 1 leaders of Gary and Trent Roush who posted a second round 68 to finish with a tournament total of fourteen under-par, 130. Sitting in a three-way tie for third were the teams of Doug and Chris Williams, Millard and Tad Tomblin, and Greg and Austin Florence who call carded tournament totals of 131 (-13).
In the First Flight there was a tie for first between the teams of Skip and Cimmie Shahan and David and Josh Bumgarner who both finished the tournament at nine under-par. After only one playoff hole it was David and Josh Bumgarner who claimed the victory with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole on the Cobb Course. Claiming third in the division was John and John Cleavenger who posted a tournament total of eight under-par. In the Second Flight it was the team of Mike and Blake Hettlinger who claimed the victory after posting rounds of 71-67 which was good enough for a one shot victory over the teams of Buddy and Garrett Butler and James and Tyler Hillyer who posted tournament totals of five under-par. There was a three way tie for the winner of the Third Flight. The teams of Jeff and Alec Brooks, Patrick and Riley Allen, and Dan and James Snavely all posted totals of three under-par, 141. The three teams went to the first sudden death playoff hole (Cobb #18) where James Snavely made an incredible up and down from just off the green to claim the victory. In the Fourth Flight it was Michael and Jace Ranson who won after carding rounds of 76-71 for a six shot victory over David and Charlie Robinson and Garry and Zac Crede who posted tournament totals of nine over-par, 153.
The Mother-Child Flight also came down to a sudden death playoff where the teams of Caroline and Lauren Ramsey faced off against Janet and Matt Moore. Both teams finished at one over-par, 145, for the tournament and headed to the 18th on the Cobb Course. Both teams tied with birdies on the first playoff hole before Janet and Matt Moore claimed the victory on the second sudden death playoff hole (#10 Cobb). Claiming third in the division was the team of Whitney and Austin Davis who posted a tournament total of 146.
In the Extended Family Flight it was the Chris Allen and Jason Perrine who claimed the win with a tournament total of one over-par, 145. Claiming second was Wesley Diehl and Mike Napier and claiming third was Josh Anderson and Josh Striker.
