The first of five statewide qualifiers for the 98th West Virginia Amateur presented by Mercedes-Benz took place on Monday at Bridgeport Country Club. The field of fifty-six players were looking to claim one of the twenty-three qualifying spots into the championship to be contested June 12th-15th at The Resort at Glade Springs. A cool morning drizzle met the players, but quickly ceased as winds and mostly cloudy skies dominated the weather for the day.
Jess Ferrell of Fairmont posted a 5-under, 67, to win medalist honors. His respective nine totals of 33 and 34 included seven birdies and two bogeys, which was enough to hold off Chris Stansberry of Morgantown and his late charge of two eagles and a birdie on his last six holes of play. Stansberry’s round of 3-under, 69, was good enough for runner-up and cleared the nearest competitor by three shots. A playoff for the last two qualifying spots and two alternates ensued after the final putt dropped. Marco Oliviero, Zach Gower, Trent McPherson, and Jon David all finished at 79 and headed to the first hole to begin the playoff. Oliviero made birdie and Gower made par to secure the final two spots into the field, while McPherson made bogey and David made double-bogey to finish as first and second alternates respectively.
The West Virginia Amateur is proud to again be presented by Mercedes-Benz and all of the great dealers here in West Virginia: Astorg Auto of Charleston, Astorg Auto of Parkersburg, and Mercedes-Benz of Morgantown. The next qualifier for the 98th West Virginia Amateur presented by Mercedes-Benz is this Friday, May 26th at Greenhills Country Club.
