Another day of hot and windy weather was forecasted for Thursday and it turned out to be just that at The Pines Country Club. The wind coupled with the heat and plentiful sunshine over the last few days made conditions great and the greens quick and true. Riverside Golf Club Head Professional, Ty Roush, began the day with a one shot lead over John Kingora, but several players lurked only a few shots back and within striking distance entering the final round.
Ty Roush went out in one-under par 34 to keep his lead safe, but faltered down the stretch on the last nine to finish with bogey-par-bogey-bogey on the closing holes and a total of 41 to make for a final round total of 75 (+4). A few groups ahead of Roush and beginning the day five-shots behind, Berry Hills Country Club Head Professional, Barry Evans, had the putter working and made the biggest move of the day. Evans recorded a front nine total of 34 and followed that effort with a 35 coming in to post a two-under 69 and become the leader in the clubhouse at +3 overall for the championship. Scott Davis of Hurricane began the day three-shots behind Roush and made a double-bogey on only his second hole, but quickly erased the error with an eagle on the par-5, fourth. A steady round followed as Davis posted 34-37 – 71 (E) to tie Evans in the clubhouse at +3. Ty Roush approached the 18th tee with a one-shot lead and needed a par on the difficult 18th to close the championship. His approach into the green was hit left and he failed to get up-and-down from there, making his overall total for the championship +3. An engaged crowd of players, club members, and media followed the three players to the first tee to begin the playoff. Davis, Evans, and Roush all had putts for birdie on #1, but ended-up settling for pars as the playoff moved to hole #2. On #2, Evans and Roush found the fairway, but due to an unlucky bounce right, Davis found himself with only a punch-out option under a grove of trees. Davis’s punch shot finished just behind the green as Evans and Roush both were able to stick the green, but at considerable distances for birdie putts. Davis played a tremendous chip shot to get up-and-down and stay alive, while both Evans and Roush two-putted for their pars. On the par-3 third, Davis found the bunker off the tee, Evans just off the green, and Roush just on the green. Scott Davis’s sand save attempt lipped out of the hole as he settled for a bogey, Ty Roush missed a slick five-footer for par, and Barry Evans made his pressure packed par putt to win the 2017 West Virginia Senior Open after the three-hole playoff!
The race for Low Amateur was also a strong one! Several of the state’s best senior amateur golfers entered with a legitimate chance to claim the title and the coveted exemption into the 98th WV Amateur presented by Mercedes-Benz. Steve Fox of Barboursville and John Kingora of Morgantown finished in a tie for Low Amateur at +6 with Timmy Mount, Philip Zambos, and Harold Payne all in the mix just a few shots behind them. In the Silver Division, Jim Carpenter of Martinsburg was able to seal the victory in style going wire-to-wire with a nine-shot victory in the division at +4 overall. Tom Spriggs of Cross Lanes and Mark White of South Charleston finished as runners-up. In the Gold Division, Leo Galang of Mineral Wells bested George Marshall of Morgantown by three shots to claim the trophy.
